Admission Guidelines
For MSc courses in Physiology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, and Microbiology, are done on the basis of the rank obtained in MU-OET (All India Manipal University Online Entrance Test). For MSc Genetics counselling, admissions are done on the basis of rank obtained in MU-OET and also Aptitude Test and Personal Interview.
Course Details
MSc in Genetic Counselling offered at Kasturba Medical College is a 2-year postgraduate program. This course is designed to train the graduates to develop interpersonal skills in providing genetic counselling to the parents regarding the potential risks of genetic disorders in the progeny. During the first year in this allied health science, students will broadly study the major subjects like embryology and anatomy, basic genetics, basic communication skills, psychology and sociology, and also research methodologies. During the second year, the subjects will be on laboratory genetics, clinical genetics, epidemiology and biostatistics, and genetic laws. After the completion of this course, the graduates will have complete knowledge on inherited genetic diseases like Down syndrome, Sickle-cell anemia, Tay-Sachs disease, muscular dystrophy and other genetic inherited diseases. The graduates will also have knowledge on providing genetic counselling to the future parents.
